Recently, the e-cigarette industry has been locked into a bit of an arms race. Devices have become increasingly boxy and can power higher-wattage loads than ever, with the biggest devices containing multiple batteries and peaking at 200 watts. Although we have no doubt that many e-smokers will use absolutely every watt that they can squeeze out of their devices, that amount of power is completely unnecessary for most. With modern sub-ohm tanks, you can generate room-filling vapor clouds at less than 25 watts — so why would you need a box mod that’s bigger than your smartphone, unless you’re working with some truly extreme atomizer designs?
That’s the mindset behind the new VaporFi VOX Mini 40, an incredibly tiny and light device with a fixed internal battery that handles loads up to 40 watts and atomizer resistances down to 0.3 ohms. The VOX Mini 40 also weighs just 4.25 ounces without a tank and fits absolutely anywhere. In fact, it’s the smallest box mod we’ve reviewed to date.

About the VaporFi VOX Mini 40
The VaporFi VOX Mini 40 is powered by a single fixed battery with a maximum current of 35 amps. We suspect that this is the same 18650 battery powering the VOX II, but the lack of threading for battery removal allows for a much smaller case. The bottom of the case is well vented and secured with two hex screws, which might make battery removal theoretically possible but difficult.
On the front of the VOX Mini 40, you’ll find a mini-USB port for charging as well as two wattage adjustment buttons and one large fire button. The mirrored front panel hides an OLED that displays the device’s wattage setting and remaining battery life as well as the resistance of the connected atomizer and the current voltage used to achieve your desired wattage. The VOX Mini 40 has a 510 thread with a spring-loaded center pin, ensuring good connectivity what whatever attachment you’d care to use.
The VOX Mini 40 supports a minimum atomizer resistance of 0.3 ohms, allowing it to work with virtually any sub-ohm tank on the market including our favorite, the VaporFi Volt Hybrid Tank. It’ll also work with a rebuildable atomizer as long as you stay within the resistance limit.
VaporFi VOX Mini 40 Review
Upon receiving our VOX Mini 40 review sample from VaporFi, we were first struck by how tiny the device feels in the hand — the pictures actually fail to get across how much smaller in the hand the VOX Mini 40 feels in comparison to more traditional box mods such as the VaporFi VOX II or the Joyetech eVic VTC Mini.
This does require a small compromise, though, in terms of battery life — if you’re using a sub-ohm tank or rebuildable atomizer with modestly high wattage settings, you can probably expect that you’ll need to recharge the VOX Mini 40 at least once per day. However, it has to be said that e-cigarettes such as the eGo e-cigarette — which is just marginally smaller and lighter than the VOX Mini — has poorer battery life and nowhere near the same capabilities. The VOX Mini 40 needs only a few hours to charge fully via the USB port.
If you’re stepping up from an e-cigarette that doesn’t support sub-ohm attachments, you can expect a major increase in vapor production with the VOX Mini 40 compared to what you’re currently using. If you’re currently using a larger box mod but don’t exceed a maximum power level of 40 watts, you can expect the VOX Mini 40 to deliver the same type of performance that you’re currently getting, but with a much smaller size and weight.
One feature that we particularly like about the VOX Mini 40 is the fact that it automatically enters standby mode when it hasn’t been used for some time. Although this does mean that you’ll have to tap the fire button five times in succession before you resume using it, it also means that you’ll have to worry a lot less about accidental misfires if you carry the device in your pocket.
VaporFi VOX Mini 40 Review: Conclusion
The VOX Mini 40 mod functions as a compromise that’s really going to hit the sweet spot for a lot of e-cigarette owners. While it has a lower maximum power setting than some other box mods, that isn’t realistically going to matter because most people aren’t going to build atomizer coils or use sub-ohm tanks that require more than 40 watts for best performance. Most sub-ohm tanks and a great many rebuildable atomizers will give you dry hits at anything above about 30 watts because they simply can’t wick e-liquid quickly enough at higher power levels.
If you don’t require a heavy, bulky box mod, it makes sense to use something that’s smaller, lighter and more stylish. That’s where the VaporFi VOX Mini 40 comes in. If you’re looking for an upgrade from your first e-cigarette, the VOX Mini 40 will generate drastically more vapor than the beginning e-cigarette kit or eGo e-cigarette you’re using now, and the improvement in performance will come with only a marginal increase in size and weight. This device is really a great buy.
